Cop yourself on

Why I Love Irish Slang?

“Tread lightly” was the first one I heard, and my response was a question: What does that even mean? They wanted me to be careful!

It’s my favourite out of all of them, and I use it as often as I can.

“You’ll be grand” always brings a big smile to my face. I know they’re on my side. They’re reassuring me that everything will be okay.

“I’d cop on if I were you” feels more like a warning to watch out. It has a different tone altogether, as if someone is telling you to wise up before you get yourself into trouble!

That’s what I love about Irish slang. When Irish people talk, it’s like listening to live poetry. I could never get enough of it.
